This is the last newsletter of the 2023-24 School Year.
Congratulations to Branden Lai, Carrie Ong, Riley Soon and Victor Zhu for completing their Mandarin language learning journey at Michigan Chinese School.
Our teachers, Tephy Qin, Donna Tseng and Melanie Yu have decided not to continue their teaching at Michigan Chinese School in the 2024-25 school year. We sincerely thank you for your dedication and effort in teaching our children, children will miss you very much. The following are their years of teaching at MCS.
Tephy Qin 2006-2008, 2013-2026, 2021-2024
Donna Tseng 2022-2024
Melanie Yu 2022-2024
I also received confirmation that Teacher Tephy Qin has decided to retire from teaching. With regret, we didn’t get the chance to thank you during the Graduation Ceremony. We wish you a happy retirement.
We have 55 students enrolled for the 2024-25 school year. However the number of students enrolled for 3rd grade and 4th grade do not meet the minimum requirement of 4 students per class, hence there is a possibility to merge 3rd and 4th grade classes in 2024-25. I will contact the parents and teachers of 3rd grade and 4th grade in early July to discuss this matter.
The following is the 2024-25 MCS Open Enrollment ad. Please help to promote the school to recruit more students who are interested in learning Mandarin.
The following are the photos and videos of the word recognition and graduation ceremony event. These links are available until July 1, 2024 and will be archived to local hard disks to save online storage space.
On June 1, The Parent Council Chairperson, Yaling Huang has officially submitted the petition of changing the graduation requirement to the MCS Board. The Board Chairperson, Yen-Liang Chen announced the decision of the MCS Board members on June 8.
Below is the summary of the voting result based on what I’ve gathered, but please advise if I missed anything; otherwise, I hereby announce that the petition review has been concluded and did not pass.
– For/Yes: 1
– No/Against: 4
– Abstain: 1
Feedback from the board members:
These changes will raise questions in the future, like why condition 2 doesn’t require proof from transfer students, but condition 3 requires proof. I disagree with this change.
If the student left the school, it doesn’t make sense to allow the student to return to the school to request a graduation certificate if they managed to complete Chinese AP with a score 4 or above within 5 years of leaving the school. It’s like the student left Eastern Michigan University in the second year, completed the degree at UOM, and then returned to EMU asking for a certificate. How would this make any sense? So I disagree with this change.
The proposal contemplates a condition through which the MCS students, either currently studying at MCS or being a former MCS student who left the school within five years from the last day of class attendance, who achieve level 4 score in the Chinese AP exam can be eligible for the graduation certificate. However, per the current verbiage of the Section III.i.8 (snip below) within the MCS Policy & Procedure Manual, the graduation certificate is meant to reward students for their perseverance of studying Chinese language while cultivating their cultural experiences and appreciation on a gradual, immersive basis, rather than to certify the students’ Chinese capabilities; therefore, unless the verbiage within the Section III.i.8 (Graduation Requirements) is revised to contemplate such “capability” based requirement, the proposal would lead to an inconsistency as to what the graduation certificate truly encompasses
Assuming such “capability” based requirement were to be incorporated into the Graduation Requirements section of the MCS Policy & Procedure Manual, additional questions (below) may arise which would give me a pulse:
Why not use AP level 5 score (vs. level 4) as the criterion if the intention is to certify students’ Chinese capabilities?
The proposal would allow a situation in which the students can be eligible for the graduation certificate if they achieve AP level 4 score, but only study at MCS for one year (or even less). In this case, how do we justify/reconcile the purpose of the MCS graduation certificate when the students can be rewarded either through the “tenure” (i.e., perseverance) track or the “capability” track (e.g., AP level 4 with a “short” study at MCS)?
Everything being equal otherwise, what’s the point of issuing the graduation certificate to those students who have left MCS for less than five years and score level 4 in Chinese AP test but weren’t qualified for the graduation certificate by the time they left MCS? Also, why is five years being the cutoff threshold? Why not use one, two, or three years, if and only if this “claw back” type of criteria can be justified?
We have finally come to the last chapter of the 2023-24 School Year. On 6/8/2024, MCS will be hosting the Graduation, Teacher and Staff Appreciation day to conclude this semester. Classes will start from 1:30pm – 2:15pm. The ceremony will be hosted at Suite 1&2, starting 2:30pm. MCS will provide food and drinks at 3:30pm, you are welcome to stay and have a little chit chat with others before we call for the day.
Give round applause to our soon-to-be graduate students who spent 11, 12 years in MCS learning Mandarin and Chinese Culture. At the same time, encourage our students who will continue their Mandarin learning journey in the coming years, keep up the good work!
Thanks for all parents spending your time and effort helping your students, sending them to school every Saturday. Thank you!
To all MCS teachers and staff, you have made tremendous effort in keeping the school operating. Without you, we wouldn’t have managed to organize events or activities successfully over the years. Thank you!
To the families who have registered for the 2024-25 school year, if you have not, please pay the fees on 6/8/2024, or you will be paying an additional registration fee of $20 after 6/8.

The Academic Director and photographer will visit all classes to take group photos, and be sure to dress well for the photoshooting.
Parents may start registering your students for the 2024-25 school year. Hope all registration can be completed by June 8, 2024 so that the Academic and I can start preparing classes for 2024-25 soon. According to the School’s policy and procedure, if there are less than 4 students in a class, the class will be merged with another class. Affected students, parents and teachers will be communicated as soon as possible.
We always face volunteer shortages every year due to students graduating or leaving the school. I hope parents can take on some volunteer tasks to ensure school can operate smoothly.

Thank you for participating in the 2nd Parent Council Meeting and allowing the MCS staff to present their works and achievements during the year. We always face volunteer shortages every year due to students graduating or leaving the school. I hope parents can take on some volunteer tasks to ensure school can operate smoothly.
We also discussed the Graduation Requirement, which I believe you should have some basic understanding of what the graduation requirement is all about. Should you have any question regarding this topic, you are welcome to approach me and Academic Admin. Ivan Tang for more details. If you would like to learn more about the petition raised during the meeting, please approach Jasmine Ku for more details.
I also announced that MCS will be offering CFL (Chinese as a Foreign Language) in the next school year. MCS will offer CFL 1 for 26 sessions, $320, starts at 3:30pm and ends at 5:00pm. We will be using the 《來!學華語》(Learn Mandarin) online material offered by the Culture Center of TECO in Chicago.
Unfortunately for next school year, we have confirmed that teachers of PreK, Grade 6 and 7 are leaving us for personal reasons. I would like to express appreciation and thank you to Teacher Qin, Teacher Tseng and Teacher Yu for their hard work and dedication in teaching our students. We will continue sourcing for qualified teachers to ensure students can continue their study in the Mandarin learning environment. I would also like to encourage parents who would like to take on this sacred job as teacher, to contribute to the MCS community.
I personally will not be at the school this Saturday due to personal commitment. However I already invited our Board’s Chairman Yen-Liang Chen to be at school on behalf of me. I would also like to ask parents to continue to look after the kids during break to avoid yelling and running in the public area.
I believe teachers already informed students about the word recognition test on June 1, 2024. Please assist your children to study and prepare for the test.
June 8, 2024 will be our last day of school, and this also means our Academic Director Ivan Tang will be leading the Graduation Ceremony preparation team to prepare the Graduation Ceremony. Wish you good success.

We are lucky that we still have a Principal in 2024-25 to provide guidance to the Vice Principal, so when the Vice Principal becomes Principal in 2025-26, it will be a much easier transition.

I would like to congratulate all the students who participated in the 2024 40th Michigan Annual Inter-School Speech Contest, we are proud of your courage and performance. I would also like to thank the parents and students who volunteered as helpers in the event, without you, this would be an impossible mission. Big thanks to Jacky Chao, his HERS ONEZO CAFE donated wonderful desserts to support the event.
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Ian Shao and Vincent Fong, who participated and won first place in the picture-story telling contest group. After randomly selecting their story, they found that it was the same story that they had practiced regularly. The story was provided by another Chinese School as this year’s contest topic. They informed the supervising teacher and requested to change their story. Their spirit of fairness, justice, and compliance with the contest’s rules is worth learning for all of us.
